Heavy Bike Exploit - Get To Other Islands Early!

In GTA Liberty City Stories, it's possible to get from Portland to Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale at the start of the game courtesy of an exploit in the '9mm Mayhem' side mission.

In GTA Liberty City Stories, it's possible to use a glitch / exploit to gain access to other islands early. There are some benefits to this which can make the story missions slightly easier as it allows you to collect hidden packages, unlocking powerful weapons at your hideout. You can also complete a number of side missions earning plenty of cash before starting the main story.

Tested & Working
This exploit was last tested and working on GTA Liberty City Stories (PSP Version) on February 22, 2025 and is unlikely to ever be patched.

Step 1: Complete the very first mission 'Home Sweet Home'.

In the first non-optional mission, you'll need to drive Vincenzo back to his warehouse, via Toni's hideout. Once you're able to save your game at the hideout, you're ready to continue.

Step 2: Glitch Introduction

Once the first mission is complete, you'll be free to take on a number of side missions and challenges. One of the hidden vehicle missions in GTA LCS involves sitting on the back of a motorbike and shooting enemies, while your buddy drives for you. It's a bit of an on-rails shooter type mini-game.

On these drive-by missions, the first batch of target enemies will spawn on special motorbikes which are super heavy, meaning if they crash into a car or lamp post, their opponent will go flying rather than them. Essentially you can think of it as a bike with even greater mass properties than a Firetruck or Coach.

The main benefit of having a super heavy vehicle is that they completely ignore water. While other vehicles will land on the surface and gradually sink, drowning Toni, a super heavy vehicle will go straight through the water, fall through 'blue hell' and then respawn back on the nearest road. Presumably so that if the AI enemy accidentally goes off course and ends up in the water, they'll end up back on the street. This is how we'll jump our way to the other islands.

Step 3: Start 9mm Mayhem

To start the mission in question for this glitch, there's a parked motorbike down an alley in the Red Light District. Getting on it will start the hidden drive-by mission '9mm Mayhem'.

Step 4: Kill The Enemy Nearby

The enemies on these missions will drive around fairly randomly, but they'll usually start pretty close to where you are in the Red Light District. You want to kill the enemy as close as possible to where you started the mission - ideally on the street right next to the alleyway. When you kill the enemy, he will obviousy fall from his bike.

One thing to bear in mind when killing the enemy is to aim for a headshot, or at least make sure you avoid damaging the bike's tires or you'll struggle to make any use of it. Taking it to the Pay 'n' Spray will reset its special feature turning it back into a normal motorbike. You can save it in your garage though, which will repair the tires and any other damage while keeping the heavy properties.

Step 5: Kill Your Driver

What you need to do now is shoot your driver until he dies. He won't take too many bullets, but once he dies you'll fail the mission and the game will respawn you pretty much back where you started when you got on the bike.

Step 6: Grab That Bike

After respawning, you need to sprint to the location where you killed the enemy and if you were close enough to the start point, their bike will still be there! Sometimes you'll spot the enemy driving away on it slowly, so kill him again before he gets away. Jump on his bike and drive into the nearest lamppost and you'll see it just crumbles like paper. Toni will still fall off the bike if you have a big collision, so don't think you can drive around on the bike knocking cars flying, but you've acquired the bike now which is a huge help towards getting to the next island.

Step 7: Jump Through The Water

While you may think jumping from the Callahan Bridge and going through the water that way is an easy way to Staunton Island, sadly the game has other ideas and will just respawn you in the middle of the bridge, where you'll just fall straight down through the water and back up again, over and over, essentially trapping you in a glitch.

The best way to get across to Staunton Island is to speed from the street just North of the Hospital, through Chinatown and hit the small grass mound just under the train tracks. Aim slightly towards the right of the metal pillar when you hit the grass and make sure you have as much speed as you can get. If all goes well, you'll jump through the water, fall through blue hell for a few seconds and be respawned on the road in Staunton Island. If not, you'll end up back in Portland so you can try again.

Step 8: To Shoreside Vale

To reach Shoreside Vale from Staunton Island, keep hold of your super heavy bike and follow the normal route over the bridge, up the curved road near Belleville Park, then simply speed off the end and you'll make it far enough across for the game to respawn you on the Shoreside Vale side of the bridge.

Step 9: Getting Back

You can replicate exactly what you did, but in reverse, to get from Shoreside back to Staunton Island. From there, you can find a boat at the docks on the East of the island and use it to sail back to Portland. If you want to get the bike back to Portland, just head to the docks and speed along them, jumping into the water as you head towards Portland. You'll respawn back in Chinatown. Dying before you've officially unlocked the other islands will always respawn you back at the Portland hospital.

Using this glitch this allows you to start the main story with the vast majority of the side content already completed, providing benefits like free weapons and ammo at your safehouse and plenty of cash, all without using a single cheat code! You can in fact collect 90+ hidden packages meaning you'll be able to pick up a Rocket Launcher from your hideout whenever you like.
